The Sit for Life fundraiser hosted by Provincetown Zen Center and Hyannis Zendo on September 7th was both lovely and poignant. We sat in the beautiful garden behind Wa from 9:00 to 5:00; thanks to Tom for generously donating the space.
One person was charged with drawing black marks on a scroll to mark the number of HIV/AIDS related deaths taking place worldwide while we sat. As the black marks piled up, the scroll stretched out and crept around the sitting space, reminding us over and over again of the unfathomable toll of this disease. There was also a bell sounded every forty minutes to mark the frequency of HIV/AIDS related deaths in the US. Everyone was deeply moved–whether they sat all day or just came in off the street to see what was happening. Many thanks to Jo An for his hard work and vision in making this happen. Donations are still coming in for the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod. I’ll post the total here when we have it. For now, here are some photos from the day.
