News From HZ/VZ–New Dharma Holders

Dear HZ Sangha and Friends,

We’re excited to share the news that Fugan, along with Tim Bokushu Tucker, was confirmed as a Dharma Holder at the Village Zendo last Sunday. We look forward to seeing how we, as a community, can make use of this opportunity to deepen our practice.

Please see the announcement (below) from the Village Zendo teachers to learn more.

We are delighted to announce that Dug Fugan Dineen and Tim Bokushu Tucker were confirmed as Dharma Holders, or Hoshis, at an intimate rite at the Village Zendo on Sunday, October 14, 2018.  As Hōshi, Fugan and Bokushu will begin to offer informal interview with Village Zendo and Hyannis Zendo students, as well as continuing their many ways of serving our communities.

Hōshi translates as one who teaches dharma. In our line, Maezumi Roshi began to use this term for a person who had nearly completed koan study. Here at the Village Zendo, the title is given to one who is well versed in the teachings and embodies them, and can share them. Hōshis continue their training while also offering different ways to teach through example, informal interview and workshops.

Fugan began Dharma practice in New Haven in 1986 with a Korean lineage Zen group. He did his first retreat with VZ in 2000, Jukai in July 2001, Tokudo in August 2004, Shuso in 2008. Fugan lives on Cape Cod with his partner, Seijin. They began Hyannis Zendo in 2009. Fugan holds a PhD in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University (2015). He has been on the music faculty at Boston College since then, teaching courses on Indian, Asian, Brazilian, and World Musics. Fugan is also an active drummer and percussionist, performing in a wide range of styles. He has recorded and toured with artists in the US, South America, Europe, and in West Africa.

Bokushu was first exposed to meditation in the early 1970s when his father gave him a mantra so that he could practice Transcendental Meditation.  But Bokushu never did meditate until he attended an ‘Intro to Zen’ session at the Village Zendo in November 2007.  Shortly afterwards, the global financial crisis vaporized his job and he meditated at the Zendo with increasing frequency.  He sat Tangaryo in November 2008, and received the precepts from Enkyo Roshi in August 2009.  Bokushu began koan study and also joined the Sing Sing sangha during 2010, led by Ryotan Sensei.  He was the Village Zendo’s Shuso (student practice leader) for Summer Ango 2014.  Bokushu is a nationally certified teacher of the Alexander Technique.  He lives and teaches in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City.

Congratulations to Fugan and Bokushu for their years of hard work and Dharma practice.

Just Right: Oryoki Training/Gathering #2

Dear Friends,
You’re invited to join us at Hyannis Zendo for our second oryoki training/hang out on Tuesday, September 11 from 5-6:30pm.

At this informal gathering, we’ll explore the forms, folds, and beauty of oryoki as we enjoy a light meal together (cooked by our tenzo-s, me and Seijin).

You’ll have the chance to ask questions and will learn to tie the knot, guaranteed.

The event is free, but we need to know who’s coming so please email me a confirmation if you plan on attending.

Late August News: Schedule and Pics (and a few haiku)

A New Schedule at HZ
While I was away at summer ango, the HZ sangha kept the practice strong on the Cape and introduced a slightly different schedule. Since this seems to be working, we’ve decided to keep the summer schedule with the addition of Wednesday evening practice. Please take a look at our fall sitting schedule.
Ango at the Grail was powerful and deep. You can hear the rich series of dharma talks on Dōgen’s Bendowa through the Village Zendo’s website or watch videos of the talks on VZ’s facebook page. Below are a few pics from the kitchen point of view.
